What is Threadless Jewellery?
Threadless jewellery comes in two parts:
- The decorative front piece: this is your ✨moment✨. Usually crafted from solid 14kt gold (because you deserve nothing less), this cutie has a small titanium pin attached to the back.
- The backing post: this is the unsung hero that holds everything together. Made from implant-grade titanium, it’s the part that actually sits inside your piercing.
To make these two besties work together, the pin on the front piece gets a little bend in it (we do this for you so you don’t need to DIY it!). That bend creates a tension fit, so when you insert it into the hollow end of the backing post, it stays snug and secure. Think: opposite of butterfly backs. Chic, safe, and easy to wear.
Understanding Backing Post Length
Not all ears are built the same, and we love that for us. That’s why our titanium backings come in a range of lengths:
- Longer posts are used for fresh piercings to make space for initial swelling.
- After about 2–12 weeks, a shorter post is needed. We call this a downsize.

Downsizing helps support internal healing and reduces movement that can cause irritation or bumps.
P.S. Our downsizing service is $30 per piercing and includes a brand new sterilised post and installation by your bestie piercer.
Understanding Backing Post Gauge
“Gauge” just means the thickness of the post.
At Metalia, our piercers use a variety of gauges depending on what’s being pierced and your individual anatomy. Remember, it’s always best to get assessed in-person if you're unsure.
Set-and-Forget… Mostly
Threadless jewellery is designed to be easy to wear. Once it's in, you’re basically set. BUT: it’s still possible to knock the front out if it gets snagged (hoodie drama, towel chaos… you know the vibes).
We recommend occasionally checking your jewellery with clean hands and gently pushing the front back in if it feels loose. Your ear stack deserves that kind of TLC.
